make musical instruments
how to...
Don Gill led a session on the history and practicalities of making musical instruments from simple materials.
He makes giant angular wooden recorders with copper pipe mouth pieces. Don explained that originally, recorders were not cylindrical as we might imagine, but four-sided objects as long as 1.5 metres.
His hand-held, fully functional organs are made from paper; the desk-mounted versions are in polished wood.
A fascinating aspect of Don's instrument making is that, although he spends hundreds of hours refining them (using tools which he has made by hand himself), he often gives them away upon their completion, keeping no documentary record of them at all. He has made two paper organs - investing many hours in their making - and has no photographic record of their existence.
