WAMFest 2012
Reading, 1-3 June 2012
WAM (Weather, Art and Music) was held in and around Reading's Town Hall and Forbury Gardens, celebrating Reading's unique position as a global centre of meteorology and its rich artistic and musical heritage.

The commission was to construct an installation for the exterior of Reading Town Hall as a reflection on the theme of the festival. It was an opportunity to consider my own sense of wonder about the beauty, power and complexity of nature, as well as reflecting a sense of urgency about damage to the natural environment.

The sculpture was devised so that it became two different structures over the weekend of the festival:

Firstly, the sunglasses were attached to 3m long bamboo sticks, forming a small crowd which looked up, mimicking what people would be doing during the WAMFest weekend: coming together to enjoy music, art and science.

On the second day, the sticks were removed and the sunglasses rested directly on wire mesh, mimicking a flock of butterflies, reminding us of the link between butterfly populations and climate change.
